Supertree Grove: OCBC Skyway, Garden Rhapsody Lights and Best Views
What the Supertrees are, how to see them and when to come.
The Supertree Grove is the image that most people associate with Gardens by the Bay. A cluster of vertical gardens between about twenty-five and fifty metres tall rises from the ground in the shape of giant trees, with canopies covered in climbing plants and a steel trunk that doubles as a working part of the park's systems. Some of the trees collect solar energy, and others act as exhaust vents for the conservatories, so the design is functional as well as decorative.
What you can do there

Walking under the trees is free, and you can stay as long as you like. Two optional experiences cost extra. An elevated walkway links two of the trees at a height of about twenty-two metres, giving a view down into the grove and out over the bay. The tallest tree has an observation platform at the top, which adds a wider view of the skyline and the ships in the strait. Neither is essential, but the walkway is the clearest way to understand how large the trees really are.
The evening show
After dark, the trees light up with a free light and music show that is among the most popular events in the city. Arrive early to get a place on the ground beneath the canopy, or lie on the grass at the edge of the grove, which gives the best view of the whole composition. The schedule can change, and there are occasional maintenance breaks, so check the official site before you plan the evening around it.
Choosing the time of day
Late afternoon is the sweet spot. The heat eases, the light softens the steel, and you can see the grove in daylight before the show begins. Morning is the quietest period and the best for photographs without crowds. Midday is the hardest time: the grove is exposed, and shade is limited. If you only have one chance, stay from late afternoon into the evening and use the nearby Cloud Forest or Flower Dome during the hottest hours.
Why the design matters

The trees are not just ornaments. Their planting includes thousands of ferns, orchids and bromeliads, and the structure shades visitors, collects rainwater and helps regulate the temperature of the domes nearby. That blend of engineering and gardening is the reason the grove appears in so many discussions of how a dense city can add green space, and the information boards repay a few minutes of your time.
Getting there
The easiest approach is from Bayfront MRT, where a covered link bridge crosses the water and leads straight toward the gardens. You can also reach the grove on foot from Marina Bay Sands in about ten minutes. A shuttle runs inside the park for visitors who find the distances tiring.
Photography and crowds
For a wide shot, stand at the lawn edge and include the skyline behind the trees. For something more abstract, point up from beneath the canopy and shoot the pattern of the metal frames and the planting. The grove is busiest on weekend evenings, so a weekday visit is much easier. Tripods can be awkward in the crowd, so check the rules before you bring one.
What to skip

You do not need to pay for both the walkway and the platform. If you have a limited budget, the walkway gives the closer, more dramatic experience. If you dislike heights, the ground-level view and the evening show are enough. And if the weather turns, a thunderstorm can close the elevated sections, so keep a plan for the domes.
Pair the grove with the Helix Bridge and a night walk along the water for one of the strongest evenings in the city.
