Best Time to Visit Geneva: Lake Geneva Weather, Bise Wind & L'Escalade

Month-by-month MeteoSwiss climate data for Geneva, comparing warm summer lake swimming with spring parks and December's Fête de l'Escalade.

Geneva has a temperate oceanic and semi-continental climate (Köppen Cfb) moderated by the water mass of Lake Geneva and framed by the Jura and Alpine chains. According to MeteoSwiss 1991 to 2020 climate normals recorded at Geneva Airport (Genève-Cointrin, 412 metres elevation), the annual mean temperature is 11.0 °C (average daily high 15.7 °C, overnight low 6.3 °C), with 1,886.9 hours of annual sunshine and 945.7 mm of precipitation spread across 107.6 rain days per year. Use this seasonal breakdown alongside our 3-day Geneva itinerary and Geneva travel guide.

Because the lake basin channels winds between the surrounding mountain ridges while retaining summer warmth well into early autumn, each season brings a distinct rhythm to the quays and old squares. Summer centres on open-air bathing piers, dawn concerts, and steamer excursions, whereas late autumn and winter shift focus toward historic festivals, museum collections, and steaming pots of fondue.

Summer (June to August): Lake Swimming and Les Aubes Concerts

Summer is Geneva's warmest and sunniest season. Average daily highs climb to 24.2 °C in June (245.8 sunshine hours), 26.7 °C in July (the sunniest month of the year with 269.2 hours of sunshine), and 26.2 °C in August (241.6 sunshine hours), while overnight lows sit comfortably between 12.7 °C and 14.6 °C. Alongside Sion in the Valais, the Geneva basin records some of Switzerland's warmest summer afternoons, reaching an all-time high of 39.7 °C at Genève-Cointrin on 7 July 2015, while brief late-afternoon convective thunderstorms occur on 8 to 9 days per month.

Warm lake water draws thousands of swimmers to the concrete decks of the Bains des Pâquis, the pebbled shore of Eaux-Vives, and Genève-Plage. Throughout July and August, the Bains des Pâquis pier hosts Les Aubes, free open-air sunrise concerts held at daybreak since 2007 as the sun rises behind the Alps, while late June brings the citywide Fête de la Musique across Parc des Bastions and the Old Town, followed on 1 August by Swiss National Day bonfires and fireworks in Parc La Grange.

Spring (March to May): Lakeside Blooms and Mild Sightseeing

Spring arrives steadily across the Petit Lac as daytime highs climb from 11.8 °C in March (161.2 sunshine hours, 7.8 rain days) to 15.9 °C in April (186.6 sunshine hours) and 20.1 °C in May (212.0 sunshine hours). Snow remains gleaming on the high crest of the Jura and Mont Salève while magnolias, tulips, and rhododendrons open along the right-bank quays and inside the 1854 Jardin Anglais.

By late May, the vast rose gardens of Parc La Grange on the Left Bank burst into colour, CGN lake steamers expand their seasonal timetables toward Lausanne and Chillon Castle, and café terraces fill across Place du Bourg-de-Four without the peak humidity of midsummer. Because international summit calendars and hotel demand are steady rather than resort-seasonal, spring weekends often offer relaxed entry at major museums and guided tours of the Palais des Nations.

Autumn (September to October): Vineyard Harvests and Golden Parks

Early autumn is one of the most rewarding periods to explore Geneva on foot. September retains late-summer warmth with an average daily high of 21.1 °C and an overnight low of 10.7 °C across 184.0 hours of sunshine and 8.3 rain days, allowing comfortable lake crossings on the Mouettes ferries and clear views from the Téléphérique du Salève.

In October, daytime highs cool to 15.5 °C (low 7.2 °C, 116.3 sunshine hours, and 96.5 mm of precipitation over 9.7 days), when autumn foliage turns the horse-chestnut alleys of Parc des Bastions and the plane trees of Carouge bright gold and the Chasselas grape harvest concludes across the cantonal vineyards.

Whatever month you choose, packing a windproof outer layer makes lakeside walks much more comfortable. Even in spring and autumn, breezes moving across the open water of the Petit Lac and the fine mist drifting downwind from the 140-metre Jet d'Eau can feel noticeably cooler on the stone breakwaters than in the sheltered courtyards of the Vieille Ville or Carouge.

In summer, bring swimwear and a towel in your daypack so you can step straight from a morning walk around the harbour onto the sunny concrete bathing decks of the Bains des Pâquis, whereas winter visitors should pack warm footwear, a scarf, and gloves for evening strolls through the cobbled upper town and torchlit Escalade processions. Checking the local forecast each morning also helps you pair clear mountain visibility with cable car rides up Mont Salève while saving overcast afternoons for Geneva's horology, fine art, and humanitarian museums.

Winter (November to February): La Bise Wind and Indoor Museums

From November (high 9.3 °C, 65.4 sunshine hours) through December (5.6 °C, 48.0 sunshine hours), January (5.1 °C, low -1.1 °C), and February (7.0 °C, low -0.2 °C), winter in the basin is cool and often overcast beneath low stratus clouds, recording an annual average of 23.9 cm of snowfall across 7.0 snow days. When the cold northeasterly Bise wind funnels down the length of Lake Geneva into the narrow harbour, freezing spray coats lakeside railings in ice sculptures and the Jet d'Eau is temporarily shut off, making it ideal weather to tour the Patek Philippe Museum, MAH, and Red Cross Museum, explore the indoor CERN Science Gateway, or warm up in the Bains des Pâquis sauna.

Mid-December Highlight: The Fête de l'Escalade

  • The night of 11 to 12 December 1602: Held on 11 to 12 December or the nearest weekend, Geneva's signature civic festival commemorates the winter night in 1602 when citizens defeated a surprise attack by over 2,000 Savoyard troops sent by Duke Charles Emmanuel of Savoy (resulting in 18 Genevan fatalities against 54 Savoyards).
  • Torchlit parade and footrace: Over 800 costumed participants in seventeenth-century armour march by torchlight with horses, halberds, and fifes through the cobbled lanes of the Vieille Ville, preceded by the popular Course de l'Escalade footrace through the upper town and followed by a ceremonial proclamation at St. Pierre Cathedral.
  • Winter culinary traditions: Throughout the festival weekend, locals ladle out hot Mère Royaume vegetable soup and smash chocolate marmites filled with marzipan vegetables, while country inns serve simmered Longeole IGP sausage with gratin of silver cardoons.
