If Bulguksa Temple is Gyeongju's architectural jewel, Mount Namsan (경주 남산) is its spiritual soul. The mountain rises immediately south of the Wolseong basin in an oval granite massif measuring 8 kilometres by 4 kilometres. Mount Namsan was revered throughout the Silla Kingdom as a sacred earthly embodiment of the Buddhist Pure Land. Over a span of seven hundred years, royal patrons and hermit monks built more than 100 temples. Carved 80 stone Buddha statues and reliefs directly into natural granite cliffs, and erected 60 stone pagodas across its forty valleys. Inscribed by UNESCO (Ref, 976) as the largest belt of the Gyeongju Historic Areas, Mount Namsan is completely free to enter and offers the most rewarding half-day hike in South Korea. Pair this trekking guide with our Gyeongju packing and footwear guide and our 3-day itinerary.

How to Reach the Mount Namsan Trailheads

Mount Namsan is divided into Western Namsan (Seo-Namsan). It is gentler and features the highest concentration of accessible rock carvings along the Samneung Valley, and Eastern Namsan (Dong-Namsan), which is steeper and leads to Chilbulam and Tongiljeon:

  • To Western Namsan (Samneung Trailhead). Board City Bus 500, 505, 506, or 507 from the Intercity Bus Terminal or Hwangnidan-gil (every 20 to 30 minutes, 1,450 KRW). Get off after 15 minutes at the Samneung (삼릉) stop. An official taxi from Hwangnidan-gil to the Samneung Visitor Center takes 10 minutes and costs 6,500 to 7,500 KRW as of November 2026.
  • To Eastern Namsan (Tongiljeon / Chilbulam Trailhead). Take City Bus 11 from downtown or Bulguksa and alight at Tongiljeon (통일전), or take a 15-minute taxi (9,500 KRW).

Route 1: The Classic Samneung Valley to Geumobong Peak Climb

For 90% of visitors, the Samneung Valley (삼릉계곡) route on Western Namsan is the single best hike on the mountain because you encounter masterpieces of Silla sculpture every 15 minutes along a shaded stone trail:

  1. 0.0 km to Samneung (Three Royal Tombs) & Red Pine Forest. Start at the free Samneung Visitor Center to pick up an English Namsan map. From there, walk through the grove of gnarled Korean red pines (sonamu) surrounding three royal Silla burial mounds.
  2. 0.7 km to Stone Seated Buddha Without a Head (삼릉계 석조여래좌상). Twenty minutes up the pine stream valley sits an 8th-century granite seated Buddha on an octagonal lotus pedestal whose head was lost centuries ago, yet whose draped monastic robes radiate calm dignity.
  3. 1.0 km to Carved Standing Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva (마애관음보살상). This figure is carved into a vertical rock outcrop just to the left of the trail. This 1.5-metre relief of the Bodhisattva of Compassion wears a jewelled crown and holds a pure water bottle, her lips tinted with natural reddish iron oxide in the stone.
  4. 1.3 km to Six-Line Bodhisattva & Seated Sakyamuni Triad. A wooden viewing platform reveals an 8th-century incised line drawing of six Buddhist figures etched into a flat granite wall like a sketch on paper.
  5. 1.6 km to Sangseonam Hermitage &. The Colossal Cliff-Carved Seated Sakyamuni (마애석가여래좌상, Treasure No, 666). Climbing the steep stone steps past tiny Sangseonam Hermitage brings you to the showstopper of Western Namsan. A 6-metre-tall Buddha carved in high relief into a sheer granite cliff face overlooking the entire Gyeongju basin. Notice how the Silla sculptor carved the head in three-dimensional high relief so the Buddha gazes down kindly upon hikers ascending the mountain. Meanwhile, the crossed legs and lotus throne are etched in shallower lines below.
  6. 2.1 km to Geumobong Summit (468 m) & Baengnyul Viewpoint. Ten minutes above the giant Buddha, you reach the wind-swept ridge road and the summit stone of Geumobong Peak, looking straight down onto the green tumuli of Daereungwon and the loop of the Hyeongsan River.

Extending to Yongjangsa Valley: The Pagoda on the Sky Cliff

Instead of retracing your steps back down Samneung Valley from Geumobong Peak, follow the well-signed ridge trail 1.5 kilometres south toward Yongjangsa Valley (용장사곡). Perched dramatically on the very edge of a sheer natural granite precipice stands the Three-Storey Stone Pagoda of Yongjangsa (Treasure No, 186). Rather than building an artificial stone base, Silla architects treated the entire living mountain peak of Namsan as the bottom pedestal of the pagoda. The 4.5-metre granite tower appears to float against the blue sky. Just below the pagoda sits a Three-Tiered Circular Pedestal with a Headless Stone Buddha (Treasure No. 187). Here 16th-century scholar Kim Si-seup wrote Korea's first classical novel, Geumo Sinhwa.

Route 3: Eastern Namsan , Chilbulam (Seven Buddhas) and Sinseonam

If you want to see a designated National Treasure in the wild, hike the 2-kilometre forest trail up Eastern Namsan from behind Tongiljeon Hall to Chilbulam Hermitage (칠불암, National Treasure No, 312). Here, an 8th-century sculptor carved a free-standing square granite pillar on all four sides with the Buddhas of the Four Directions. Directly in front of a vertical cliff wall carved with a seated Sakyamuni triad, seven Buddhas in total, where local monks still chant and offer fresh mountain spring water every morning. Climb the iron staircase 60 metres directly above Chilbulam to reach the cliff ledge of Sinseonam (신선암, Treasure No, 199), where a Bodhisattva sits on clouds carved into a recessed stone niche high above the tree canopy.
