Luxor 3-Day Itinerary: East Bank Temples, Northern Royal Wadis & Southern Mortuary Loop
Follow our hour-by-hour 3-day Luxor itinerary covering Karnak, Luxor Temple, the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut Temple, Medinet Habu, Deir el-Medina, and sunset felucca sails.
Three full days is the ideal duration to experience Luxor without suffering "temple fatigue" or walking through shadeless stone courtyards during the 13:00 to 15:30 afternoon heat peak. Group the monuments into three logical geographic zones: Day 1 on the East Bank, Day 2 in the Northern West Bank royal wadis, and Day 3 along the Southern West Bank mortuary belt. This layout cuts taxi time in half and puts you inside every major site before the cruise-ship buses arrive. Below is a field-tested, hour-by-hour three-day plan with approximate November 2026 entry fees.
| Day & Zone | Morning (06:00 to 12:00) | Midday Break (12:30 to 16:00) | Late Afternoon & Evening (16:00 to 20:30) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1: East Bank Living Temples | 06:00 Karnak Temple Complex (Hypostyle Hall, Sacred Lake & Open-Air Museum) | Sa'idi lunch & Hotel pool break + Mummification Museum | 16:30 Avenue of Sphinxes walk into Luxor Temple at sunset + 19:00 Luxor Museum |
| Day 2: Northern West Bank Royal Wadis | 06:00 Valley of the Kings (3 base tombs + KV62 & KV9) + 09:15 Hatshepsut Temple + Tombs of Nobles | Al-Gezira garden lunch on the West Bank & Afternoon rest | 16:30 Sunset wooden felucca sail on the Nile toward Banana Island |
| Day 3: Southern West Bank Mortuary Loop | 05:00 Optional Dawn Balloon + Colossi of Memnon + Deir el-Medina + Medinet Habu + Ramesseum | Late lunch on the East Bank Corniche & Spice souq stroll | Optional Day 4 northern excursion to Dendera and Abydos temples |
Day 1: The East Bank (Karnak at Dawn, Avenue of Sphinxes, Luxor Temple, and Luxor Museum)
Dedicate your first day entirely to the East Bank so you can orient yourself along the Nile Corniche and purchase your 5-Day Luxor Pass if needed:
- 06:00 to 09:30: Sunrise at the Karnak Temple Complex (around 600 EGP by card as of November 2026). Take a 10-minute taxi (100 to 150 EGP) to arrive at the Karnak Temple Visitor Centre right as the gates open at 06:00. Walk straight through the First Pylon into the 134-column Great Hypostyle Hall while you have the 21-metre central papyrus columns to yourself. Continue past the 29.5-metre Obelisk of Hatshepsut and the Festival Hall of Thutmose III to the Sacred Lake. Afterwards, spend 45 minutes in the Open-Air Museum inspecting the reconstructed White Chapel of Senusret I and Red Chapel of Hatshepsut.
- 10:00 to 15:30: Corniche Breakfast, Pool Break, and the Mummification Museum. Return to your East Bank hotel for a late breakfast and a midday rest during the warmest hours. Around 13:00 or 17:00, step into the air-conditioned Mummification Museum on the Corniche (around 220 EGP as of November 2026). Its galleries explain the 70-day natron embalming ritual, canopic jar iconography, and animal mummies before your West Bank tomb visits.
- 16:00 to 18:30: Avenue of Sphinxes and Sunset at Luxor Temple (around 500 EGP as of November 2026). Enter Luxor Temple an hour before sunset. Walk a section of the excavated 2.7-kilometre Avenue of Sphinxes and admire the 25-metre pink granite obelisk at the First Pylon. Inside the court, inspect the thirteenth-century Abu el-Haggag Mosque and watch the floodlights illuminate the Colonnade of Amenhotep III at dusk.
- 19:00 to 20:30: Evening at the Luxor Museum (around 400 EGP as of November 2026). Walk 1 kilometre north along the Corniche to the Luxor Museum, where theatrical evening lighting showcases the 1989 Luxor Temple Statue Cachette and the royal mummies of Ahmose I and Ramesses I. Finish with dinner from our Luxor dining guide.

Day 2: The Northern West Bank (Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut Temple, and Sunset Felucca)
Cross the Nile at 05:30 on the municipal ferry (15 EGP cash) or private motor launch (100 to 150 EGP). Meet your pre-arranged West Bank driver at the landing (around 800 to 1,200 EGP for the morning loop as of November 2026).
- 06:00 to 09:00: Valley of the Kings (around 750 EGP base ticket + 20 EGP cash tram as of November 2026). Follow our Valley of the Kings strategy at the visitor centre card window. Buy your base ticket (3 tombs) plus extra tickets for KV9 (Ramesses V & VI, ~220 EGP) and KV62 (Tutankhamun, ~700 EGP). Visit KV62 and KV9 first before queues build, then use your three base punches on KV11 (Ramesses III), KV2 (Ramesses IV), and KV6 (Ramesses IX) or KV8 (Merenptah).
- 09:15 to 10:45: Mortuary Temple of Queen Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari (around 440 EGP + 20 EGP tram as of November 2026). Drive 10 minutes across the ridge to Deir el-Bahari. Climb the three limestone terraces to photograph the painted Red Sea expedition reliefs in the Punt Colonnade. Finish at the Birth Colonnade and the Chapel of Anubis before 11:00 when the rock amphitheatre heats up.
- 11:00 to 12:15: Tombs of the Nobles at Sheikh Abd el-Qurna (Ramose TT55 & Sennefer TT96). Stop at the West Bank Ticket Office near the Colossi of Memnon first to pick up your noble tomb tickets. Then visit Vizier Ramose (TT55) for its Eighteenth Dynasty limestone carvings and Mayor Sennefer (TT96) for its painted grapevine ceiling.
- 16:30 to 18:15: Sunset Wooden Felucca Sail on the Nile. Enjoy lunch at a West Bank garden café in Al-Gezira followed by a shaded midday rest. At 16:30, board a canvas-sailed felucca (around 400 to 600 EGP per boat as of November 2026) to glide upriver at sunset.

Day 3: The Southern West Bank (Balloon Flight, Deir el-Medina, Medinet Habu, and Ramesseum)
Your third day explores the best-preserved colours and monumental architecture of the Southern West Bank loop:
- 05:00 to 07:30: Optional Sunrise Hot-Air Balloon Flight (around 75 to 120 USD as of November 2026). Float gently over the sugarcane fields, the Ramesseum, and Hatshepsut's terraces as dawn breaks over the Eastern Desert.
- 08:00 to 09:45: Colossi of Memnon and Deir el-Medina (around 220 EGP as of November 2026). Pause for 15 minutes at the twin 18-metre Colossi of Memnon on the main road. Pick up your minor-site tickets at the adjacent West Bank Ticket Office and drive up to Deir el-Medina. Descend into the vaulted painted burial chambers of Sennedjem (TT1) and Inherkhau (TT359), then inspect the Ptolemaic Temple of Hathor and the stone house foundations of the royal tomb builders.
- 10:00 to 11:45: Medinet Habu (Mortuary Temple of Ramesses III, around 220 EGP as of November 2026). Walk through the fortified Syrian-style migdol gate of Medinet Habu to see the Sea Peoples naval battle reliefs. Inside the second peristyle court, look up to admire brilliant original blue and gold ceiling paint.
- 12:00 to 13:00: The Ramesseum (around 220 EGP as of November 2026) and Valley of the Queens. Conclude your West Bank circuit standing beside the fallen 1,000-tonne granite colossus of Ramesses II ("Ozymandias") at the Ramesseum. You can also add 45 minutes at the Valley of the Queens (~220 EGP) to see the tombs of Princes Amun-her-khepeshef (QV55) and Khaemwaset (QV44).
Traveller tips
If you have a fourth day in Luxor, hire a private car for a full-day excursion north. The Temple of Seti I at Abydos and the Temple of Hathor at Dendera feature cleaned turquoise astronomical ceilings. Review our Luxor orientation and packing checklist before setting out.
To keep your three days running smoothly, prepare your cards and cash the evening before Day 1. Keep two Visa or Mastercard bank cards in a zipped wallet for the cashless Ministry ticket terminals. Separate 400 EGP in small 10, 20, and 50 EGP notes each morning for ferries, electric trams, and bottled water. If you travel during the warm shoulder months of April or October, shift your midday hotel break thirty minutes earlier (from 12:00 to 16:00). You can then enjoy the cool evening hours at Luxor Temple and the Luxor Museum until 20:30. Families travelling with children often swap one royal tomb on Day 2 for a late-afternoon felucca excursion to Banana Island. Shaded orchard paths and sweet finger bananas offer a relaxing break from hieroglyphs. Confirm your driver's mobile number on WhatsApp before stepping out at each West Bank car park so you can reconnect in seconds at the exit gate.
