Arriving in Valencia: Manises Airport (VLC) Metro Lines 3 & 5, Joaquín Sorolla AVE High-Speed Rail & Valenbisi

Navigate Valencia Manises Airport (VLC) Metro Lines 3 and 5, SUMA Zone AB+ fares, the crucial split between Joaquín Sorolla AVE station and Estació del Nord, EMT buses, and Valenbisi bikes.

Situated midway down Spain's Mediterranean Levante coast, Valencia is one of the easiest cities in Southern Europe to enter by air or rail. An underground metro line begins directly inside the regional terminal of Manises Airport. High-speed AVE rail tracks link Madrid to central Valencia in just 100 minutes. Once you arrive, the flat topography of the Turia plain makes getting around by metro, tram, contactless bus, or bicycle effortless. Keep two local transit rules in mind before setting off. First, Manises Airport sits in fare Zone B rather than the city zone. Second, high-speed and regional trains use two separate central railway stations located 800 metres apart.

Valencia Manises Airport (VLC) to the city centre in 20 minutes

Valencia Airport (IATA: VLC) sits 8 kilometres west of Ciutat Vella in the municipality of Manises. Unlike airports that require shuttle buses to reach rail platforms, Valencia's metro station is built into the ground floor of the terminal building:

  • Metrovalencia Lines 3 and 5 (Direct Underground Train). Follow the terminal signs from the arrivals hall down to the Aeroport metro station. Both Line 3 (red, toward Rafelbunyol) and Line 5 (green, toward Marítim) share the same underground tunnel into the city centre. Trains depart every 7 to 10 minutes on weekdays and every 10 to 20 minutes on weekends. The ride takes 19 minutes to Àngel Guimerà on the western edge of Ciutat Vella. It takes 21 minutes to Xàtiva outside Estació del Nord and Plaza del Ayuntamiento, and 23 minutes to Colón for Eixample. Line 5 continues east to Ayora and Marítim for connections to the coastal tramway.
  • The SUMA Zone AB+ / Airport Tariff Nuance. Since the 2022 fare integration, metropolitan Valencia uses two main fare zones (Zone A for the city and Zone B for the metropolitan ring). The airport station also requires a dedicated airport tariff. Standard single or 10-journey SUMA 10 Zone A city tickets do not open the turnstiles at Aeroport station. To ride between the airport and the centre, buy a SUMA Zone AB+ airport ticket at the red machines or tap a contactless bank card. Travellers can alternatively carry the 24-, 48-, or 72-hour Valencia Tourist Card, which covers unlimited airport metro rides across Zones A and B. Check the official Metrovalencia website for current first and last train departures.
  • EMT Bus Line 150 and Official Taxis. Municipal EMT Bus 150 (MetroBus) connects the airport terminal with Manises, Mislata, and Avenida del Cid. It reaches downtown Valencia near the Central Market in 35 to 40 minutes. White metered taxis wait outside the arrivals kerb and reach Ciutat Vella or Ruzafa hotels in 15 to 20 minutes along the A-3 avenue.

The two railway stations rule: València Joaquín Sorolla vs Estació del Nord

Travellers arriving or departing by train must check which of Valencia's two central terminals is printed on their ticket. Turning up at the wrong building is the single most common transit mistake in the city:

  1. València Joaquín Sorolla (High-Speed AVE, Ouigo, Iryo & Euromed). Located at Calle San Vicente Mártir 171, roughly 800 metres south of the historic station, Joaquín Sorolla handles all high-speed and long-distance trains. High-speed Renfe AVE, low-cost Ouigo, and red Iryo trains run on the 391-kilometre high-speed line from Madrid Chamartín or Puerta de Atocha. That direct journey takes 1 hour 40 minutes to 1 hour 55 minutes. Mediterranean corridor Euromed and Intercity trains from Barcelona Sants arrive here in 2 hours 40 minutes to 3 hours 15 minutes. Direct AVE trains also link Seville Santa Justa and Córdoba in roughly 4 hours. A free shuttle bus (autobús lanzadera) connects Joaquín Sorolla directly to Estació del Nord every 10 to 15 minutes upon showing a high-speed ticket. Visitors can walk the flat 10-minute footpath north or ride Metro Lines 1, 2, or 7 from adjacent Jesús or Bailén stations.
  2. Estació del Nord (Estación del Norte, Commuter & Regional Trains). Architect Demetrio Ribes Marco opened this Valencian Art Nouveau terminal in 1917 beside the 1859 neoclassical Bullring at Xàtiva metro station. A ceramic mosaic eagle crowns its monumental main facade. Inside, tiled ground-floor waiting halls celebrate local orange harvests with "Good Voyage" inscriptions in twelve languages. All six Renfe Cercanías (Rodalia C1 to C6) commuter lines and regional Media Distancia trains depart from these platforms. That includes Line C2 trains to Xàtiva (35 to 45 minutes), Line C1 trains to Gandia, and Line C6 trains to Sagunto (28 minutes).

EMT buses, Tram Line 10 to the City of Arts, and Valenbisi cycling

Within the city, red municipal EMT Valencia buses accept contactless Visa, Mastercard, and mobile wallets directly on the validator behind the driver. Multi-ride travellers can buy a reloadable 10-journey SUMA 10 Zone A card at any metro machine or tobacco shop (estanco). Each card works across Metrovalencia, EMT buses, and Cercanías Zone A with one free transfer within 90 minutes. For the City of Arts and Sciences and Oceanogràfic, board Metrovalencia Light Rail Line 10, opened in May 2022. Line 10 runs underground from Alacant through Russafa and reaches Ciutat Arts i Ciències - Justícia and Oceanogràfic in 11 minutes. Surface EMT Buses 35, 95, and 99 follow the same riverbed corridor. To reach Malvarrosa Beach and El Cabanyal, ride surface Tram Lines 4, 6, or 8 or EMT Buses 32 and 92. Meanwhile, EMT Bus 25 runs from Porta de la Mar directly to El Palmar in Albufera Natural Park. Because Valencia is flat and linked by over 200 kilometres of segregated cycle lanes (carril bici) and the 9 km Turia riverbed, cycling is ideal. Pick up a 7-day pass on the 275-station municipal Valenbisi bike-share network or rent a cruiser bike in El Carmen or Ruzafa.
