Most rushed visitors try to cram Petra into a single exhausting day. Walking 4 kilometres downhill through the Siq to the Basin, climbing 800 steps to the Monastery at midday, and slogging 4 kilometres back uphill to the Visitor Center gate on blistered feet. Buying a 3-day Petra pass (or the 3-day tier of the Jordan Pass) costs only a tiny fraction more than a 1-day ticket and lets you engineer your routes by elevation and sun angles. Over three full days, you can enter from two different directions, hit every major cliff viewpoint in optimal lighting, and avoid walking the same uphill canyon stretch twice in one afternoon.

Route summary: Approximately 13 kilometres of walking and 600 rock-cut steps, focusing on the eastern gorge, the outer tombs, and the high eastern cliff of Jabal al-Khubtha.

  1. 06:00 to 07:30: Visitor Center Gate, Bab al-Siq, and the 1.2 km Siq. Step out of your hotel on Lower Tourism Street with your physical passport to validate your multi-day ticket at the Visitor Center window. Politely decline the horse touts inside the turnstiles with a firm "La, shukran" and walk the separated pedestrian path down Bab al-Siq. Pause to inspect the three monolithic Djinn Blocks and the two-tiered Obelisk Tomb and Bab al-Siq Triclinium before crossing the 1964 flood-diversion bridge into the 1.2-kilometre Siq.
  2. 07:30 to 09:00: Al-Khazneh (The Treasury) in Calm Morning Shade and First Direct Sun. Emerge from the dark slot canyon into the plaza facing the 39.5-metre facade of Al-Khazneh. Enjoy the quiet cobbles before day-trip coaches arrive from Amman around 09:30. Then watch the morning sun slice down through the narrow canyon opening to ignite the rose-red Corinthian columns and upper urn. Ignore the young touts offering an unauthorized scramble up the rock cleft at the northern corner of the plaza.
  3. 09:00 to 11:00: The Street of Facades, Nabataean Theater, and Royal Tombs. Walk northwest through the Outer Siq past the tiered Street of Facades and the 7,000-seat bedrock Theater. Cross the wadi bed and climb the broad stone steps onto the western shelf of Jabal al-Khubtha to explore the four Royal Tombs from south to north. The vaulted Urn Tomb (converted into a Byzantine cathedral in 446 CE), the swirling mineral-banded Silk Tomb, the Corinthian Tomb, and the five-storey Palace Tomb.
  4. 11:00 to 13:30: The Official Al-Khubtha Trail to the High Treasury Lookout. Immediately north of the Palace Tomb, follow the official PDTRA directional sign onto the Al-Khubtha Trail. Climb the 600 Nabataean rock-cut steps past the high cistern and Nabataean worship niche onto the plateau crest. Then follow the undulating rock path south to the cliffside viewpoint looking straight down onto the Treasury from above.
  5. 13:30 to 16:30: Midday Rest and the JICA Petra Museum. Descend the Al-Khubtha stairs to the Royal Tombs and walk back through the Siq while day-trippers are still deep in the Basin. Spend the warm mid-afternoon inside the air-conditioned Petra Museum at the Visitor Center gate (opened in April 2019), examining the excavated hydraulic pipes, elephant capitals, and stelae before dining in Wadi Musa.

Day 2: Little Petra (Siq al-Barid), the Back-Door Hike to Ad-Deir & the Central Basin

Route summary: A continuous one-way traverse of roughly 14 kilometres from north to east, replacing the hot 800-step uphill Monastery climb with a scenic downhill descent.

  1. 07:30 to 09:00: Little Petra (Siq al-Barid) and the Painted Biclinium. Because you already validated your multi-day Petra ticket on Day 1, take a 15-minute hotel shuttle or agreed-rate taxi 9 kilometres north to Little Petra (Siq al-Barid) in Al-Beida. Walk through its narrow 350-metre sandstone defile to view the first-century CE Hellenistic vine frescoes inside the Painted Biclinium.
  2. 09:00 to 11:30: The Official 4x4 Shuttle and Back-Door Trail to Ad-Deir (The Monastery). At the Al-Beida barrier, board an official local Bedouin cooperative 4x4 pickup truck (cash in JOD) for the 5-kilometre dirt track to the trailhead checkpoint. Show your stamped Petra pass and hike the well-graded Back-Door trail across open mountain ledges above Wadi Araba. You arrive directly at the 45-metre facade of Ad-Deir with less than half the vertical climbing of the main staircase.
  3. 11:30 to 13:30: Ad-Deir Viewpoints and Downhill Descent of the 800 Steps. Scramble up the short rocky knolls opposite the Monastery for panoramas toward Jabal Haroun, then walk down the 800-plus rock-cut steps through the shaded side gorge to the Basin restaurant complex.
  4. 13:30 to 17:00: Qasr al-Bint, Great Temple, Byzantine Church, and Colonnaded Street. Spend the afternoon exploring the central city floor detailed in our Basin and Colonnaded Street guide. Inspect the 23-metre freestanding masonry of Qasr al-Bint and climb the stairways of the 7,560-square-metre Great Temple. Cross the wadi to admire the floor mosaics of the Byzantine Church and the Winged Lions Temple ridge, then walk out along the Colonnaded Street and Siq at dusk (or take an official PDTRA electric club car from the Basin if your knees are tired).

Day 3: High Place of Sacrifice (Al-Madbah), Wadi Farasa Loop & Sunset at the Royal Tombs

Route summary: Approximately 11 kilometres covering Petra's most atmospheric southern mountain loop, followed by golden-hour photography or an onward transfer to Wadi Rum.

  1. 07:00 to 10:00: Ascent to the High Place of Sacrifice (Al-Madbah). Walk through the Siq and turn left just past the Treasury into the side gorge at the start of the Street of Facades. Climb the ancient rock-cut processional steps up Jabal al-Madbah past the two 6-metre monolithic Nabataean obelisks to the High Place of Sacrifice (1,065 metres). Here carved libation channels and an open-air altar platform overlook the entire sandstone bowl of Petra.
  2. 10:00 to 12:30: The Western Descent through Wadi Farasa to Qasr al-Bint. Rather than returning down the steep eastern steps, follow the trail down the western flank of Jabal al-Madbah into Wadi Farasa. Pass the rock-hewn Lion Fountain, the Garden Tomb cistern, and the Roman Soldier Tomb. Continue past the fluted interior columns of the Renaissance Tomb and Painted Triclinium before emerging near Qasr al-Bint and Al-Habis Crusader fort.
  3. 12:30 to 17:00: Final Afternoon Options. Walk back to the Royal Tombs to watch late-afternoon sunlight turn the Urn and Silk Tombs deep crimson. Afterwards, enjoy a traditional platter of lamb mansaf or zarb in Wadi Musa, or depart south for an overnight desert camp in Wadi Rum and Aqaba.

How to adapt this 3-day route for winter rain, summer heat, or 2-day trips

If your schedule in Jordan allows only two full days in Petra instead of three, combine the main highlights of Days 1 and 2 while keeping the downhill Back-Door advantage. On Day 1 of a two-day trip, walk through the Siq at 06:00 to Al-Khazneh. Next, climb the High Place of Sacrifice and descend Wadi Farasa into the Basin. Spend the afternoon exploring Qasr al-Bint, the Great Temple, the Colonnaded Street, and the Royal Tombs on your unhurried walk out toward the gate. On Day 2, take an early morning taxi north to Little Petra (Siq al-Barid) and ride the official 4x4 shuttle to the Back-Door trailhead. Hike across the mountain plateau to Ad-Deir (The Monastery), descend the 800 steps into the Basin, and finish your afternoon at the JICA Petra Museum outside the Visitor Center gate. During winter months from November to March, always check the Jordan Meteorological Department forecast each evening. If heavy rain is forecast for Day 2, swap your itinerary days so you complete narrow gorge walks on the clearest, driest morning.

To keep your energy high across all three days, build deliberate rest and hydration pauses into the middle of each day. Between 12:30 and 14:30, the sun sits directly overhead and tour groups crowd the narrowest stretches of the canyon. Pause for forty-five minutes in the shade of the Nymphaeum pistachio tree, inside the vaulted stone courtyard of the Urn Tomb, or at the Bedouin tea benches beneath the High Place of Sacrifice. Drinking half a litre of water mixed with electrolytes and eating a light picnic of fresh flatbread, cheese, almonds, and Medjool dates keeps your legs fresh for the afternoon walk. By pacing your three days around cool morning climbs, midday shade, and late-afternoon golden light, you experience every major Nabataean monument in Petra without crowd stress or exhaustion.
