Petra sits at the strategic crossroads of southern Jordan's highland and desert landscapes. Within a 30-to-120-minute drive of Wadi Musa lie four contrasting worlds: the monolithic sandstone inselbergs and Thamudic petroglyphs of the Wadi Rum Protected Area, the coral fringing reefs of Aqaba on the Red Sea, the twelfth-century Crusader ramparts of Shobak Castle, and the four-ecosystem gorge of the Dana Biosphere Reserve. The official Jordan Pass covers admission to both Wadi Rum and Shobak Castle along with Petra. Combining these sites as day trips from your Wadi Musa hotel or as a southern loop requires minimal extra ticket cost.

Wadi Rum Protected Area ("The Valley of the Moon", 105 km South)

Located 105 kilometres south of Wadi Musa, Wadi Rum (WAH-dee ROOM) is a 1.5-to-2-hour drive via Highway 15 or an easy ride on the morning coach in our Petra transport guide. UNESCO inscribed the reserve in 2011 as a Mixed World Heritage Site (Reference 1377) covering 74,200 hectares (742 square kilometres):

  • Geology and Thamudic Rock Art. Here, sheer Palaeozoic sandstone and granite massifs rise abruptly out of flat crimson and golden sand valleys. Iconic peaks include the seven fluted pillars of Jabal al-Mazmar ("The Seven Pillars of Wisdom") and Jordan's highest peak, Jabal Umm ad-Dami (1,854 metres). Across the canyon walls, UNESCO documents more than 25,000 rock carvings (petroglyphs) and 20,000 Thamudic, Nabataean, and early Arabic inscriptions tracing 12,000 years of human presence and camel domestication.
  • Key Sights Inside the Reserve. All visits register at the Wadi Rum Visitor Center opposite the Seven Pillars of Wisdom (free entry with the Jordan Pass) before passing through the Bedouin village of Rum into the off-road protected zone. Highlights on a 3-to-6-hour Bedouin 4x4 pickup tour include the first-century CE Nabataean Temple of Allat and Lawrence's Spring (Ain ash-Shallaleh) linked to T. E. Lawrence and the 1917 Arab Revolt. Jeep routes also visit the prehistoric rock drawings of Khazali Canyon, the red sand dunes of Al-Hasany, and the natural stone spans of Um Fruth Rock Bridge and Burdah Rock Bridge.
  • Day Trip vs Overnight Desert Camp & 4x4 Transfer Trap. While you can visit Wadi Rum on a full-day trip from Petra, spending one night inside a desert camp for a traditional subterranean Bedouin zarb barbecue and stargazing is far more rewarding. Field trap to avoid: Some ultra-cheap online camp listings advertise negligible room rates, then demand an exorbitant mandatory charge for the 15-minute 4x4 transfer from Rum Village and for jeep tours. Always confirm the exact 4x4 camp transfer and jeep tour prices in Jordanian Dinars in writing before booking, or arrange regulated 4x4 tours at the official Visitor Center tariff board.

Aqaba and the Red Sea Marine Park (125 km South)

Continuing 60 kilometres southwest from the Wadi Rum junction down the Wadi Yutum gorge brings you to Aqaba. Jordan's only Red Sea port sits 125 kilometres (1 hour 45 minutes) south of Petra at the tip of the Gulf of Aqaba:

  • Why Pair Aqaba with Petra. Sitting at sea level (0 metres elevation), Aqaba stays 8°C to 10°C warmer than highland Wadi Musa during the winter months of December to February in our climate calendar. This makes it an ideal warm-water finale after three days of cold-morning canyon hiking.
  • Coral Reef Snorkelling and Heritage Sights. Fifteen kilometres south of downtown Aqaba toward the Saudi border stretches the Aqaba Marine Park (South Beach). Here, over 20 fringing coral dive and snorkel sites can be explored right from the shore without a boat. Easy swim-out sites include the Japanese Garden reef, the Seven Sisters pinnacles, the scuttled 1985 Cedar Pride shipwreck, and an underwater M42 Duster anti-aircraft tank in shallow water. In town, visit the sixteenth-century Mamluk Castle (Aqaba Fort) beside the Arab Revolt Flagpole, the fourth-century CE early Christian church of Ayla, and the archaeological museum. Afterwards, fly out of King Hussein International Airport (AQJ) or catch the JETT coach to Amman.

Shobak Castle (Krak de Montréal, 30 km North) & Dana Biosphere Reserve (55 km North)

Heading north from Wadi Musa along scenic Route 35 (the King's Highway) unlocks two dramatic stops that take half a day together or fit seamlessly into your drive between Amman and Petra:

  • Shobak Castle (Krak de Montréal, 30 Minutes North). Perched atop a conical limestone hill at 1,330 metres elevation, Shobak Castle was built in 1115 CE by Crusader King Baldwin I of Jerusalem. As the first Crusader stronghold east of the Jordan Rift Valley, it guarded caravans between Cairo and Damascus until Saladin (Salah ad-Din) captured it in May 1189. Entry is included in the Jordan Pass. Bring the headtorch from our packing guide to descend the 375 rock-cut subterranean steps of the castle's secret water-spring tunnel and inspect the fourteenth-century Mamluk calligraphic inscriptions carved around the outer curtain towers.
  • Dana Biosphere Reserve and Fifteenth-Century Dana Village (50 Minutes North). Twenty-five kilometres north of Shobak, the stone-built Ottoman cliff village of Dana perches at 1,200 metres elevation. It overlooks Jordan's largest nature reserve, covering 308 square kilometres managed by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN). The gorge drops down to -50 metres in Wadi Araba across four biogeographical zones along the 14-kilometre Wadi Dana to Feynan Eco-Lodge hiking trail.

How to sequence Petra, Wadi Rum, Shobak, and Aqaba into one southern loop

To visit all four destinations without backtracking along the same highway twice, build a continuous north-to-south loop between Amman and the Red Sea. On your journey south from Amman, drive scenic Route 35 (the King's Highway) to visit the Dana Biosphere Reserve viewpoint. Explore the 375 subterranean steps of 1115 Shobak Castle in the afternoon before checking into your Wadi Musa hotel for three nights. Spend two or three full days hiking the trails of Petra and Little Petra in our 3-day Petra itinerary. On your fourth morning, check out of Wadi Musa at 08:30 and drive or ride the tourist bus 105 kilometres south to the Wadi Rum Visitor Center. Spend the afternoon on a 4x4 jeep tour across the sand dunes, rock bridges, and Thamudic petroglyph canyons of Wadi Rum, followed by a traditional sand-pit zarb dinner in a Bedouin desert camp. The next morning, drive the final 60 kilometres down to Aqaba on the Red Sea to snorkel the reefs of the Aqaba Marine Park. From Aqaba, fly out of King Hussein International Airport (AQJ) or ride the afternoon coach up Highway 15 to Amman.

Traveller tips

Before setting out on any southern day trip or multi-day loop from Wadi Musa, review three practical road and desert guidelines. First, fill your rental car fuel tank at the petrol stations in Upper Wadi Musa or along Highway 15 before turning onto rural mountain roads toward Shobak Castle, Dana Village, or Little Petra, where fuel stations are sparse. Second, when packing for an overnight stay in a Wadi Rum desert camp between October and April, keep a warm fleece jacket, long trousers, and closed shoes in your overnight bag. Like highland Petra, Wadi Rum's open sand valleys lose heat rapidly after dark once the desert sun drops below the granite and sandstone massifs. Third, bring your physical passport and validated Jordan Pass QR code on every excursion. Rangers at the Shobak Castle gate and the Wadi Rum Visitor Center scan your Jordan Pass to waive the separate site entry fees. Routine highway police checkpoints between Ma'an, Wadi Rum, and Aqaba also occasionally ask drivers to show their passport and rental contract.

Travellers relying on public buses rather than a rental car can still link Petra, Wadi Rum, and Aqaba smoothly. Book seats 48 hours ahead on the morning tourist coaches, or share a fixed-rate taxi with fellow hikers from your Wadi Musa hotel. At Aqaba's South Beach Marine Park, local dive centres rent masks, snorkels, and fins right near the shoreline path. Wearing neoprene water shoes protects your feet from sea urchins and coral rubble at low tide. After your swim, downtown seafood grills serve fresh Red Sea sayadiyah (spiced fish over caramelized onion rice) before your evening bus or flight north.
