3-Day Cartagena Itinerary: Walled City, Fortresses and Islands
A well-paced three-day route through Cartagena de Indias that pairs morning architectural walks and hilltop fortresses with shaded afternoon museums and a full day on the Caribbean coral reefs.
Three full days in Cartagena de Indias give you the ideal balance between the intramural stone monuments of the Spanish colonial port, the hilltop fortresses and Afro-Caribbean plazas outside the inner gate, and the turquoise coral reefs of the Rosario archipelago. To beat the midday equatorial sun, we start each morning shortly after 08:00 and reserve early afternoons for shaded cloisters or sea breezes.

Day 1: The Walled City, Centro, San Diego and Sunset on the Ramparts
- Morning in Centro: Enter beneath the three vaulted arches of the Torre del Reloj into triangular Plaza de los Coches and the Portal de los Dulces. Walk past Plaza de la Aduana to the coral-stone cloister of Sanctuary of San Pedro Claver, then continue to Plaza de Bolívar for the Cathedral of Santa Catalina de Alejandría (begun 1577) and the Museo del Oro Zenú.
- Afternoon and Evening: Tour the 1770 Palace of the Inquisition during the midday heat, enjoy fried red snapper and coconut rice (see what to eat in Cartagena), then stroll past the 1911 Teatro Adolfo Mejía and Plaza de San Diego to Las Bóvedas before walking the top of Las Murallas to watch sunset from the Baluarte de Santo Domingo.

Day 2: Castillo San Felipe, Cerro de la Popa and Getsemaní
- Morning on the Fortified Hills: Arrive at Castillo San Felipe de Barajas at 08:00 to walk its eight batteries and underground brick counter-mining tunnels on San Lázaro Hill, then take a taxi up to the 150-metre summit of Cerro de la Popa to visit the 1607 Augustinian Convent of Santa Cruz de la Popa.
- Afternoon and Evening in Getsemaní: Walk through Parque del Centenario to spot wild three-toed sloths and green iguanas in the tree canopy, then explore the street murals of Calle de la Sierpe, Calle de San Juan, and Callejón Angosto before gathering on Plaza de la Trinidad after dark.

Day 3: Boat Excursion to the Rosario Islands and Isla Barú
- Full-Day Island Crossing: Board an 08:00 speedboat from the Muelle Turístico de la Bodeguita across Cartagena Bay, passing the 18th-century stone forts of San Fernando and San José at Bocachica to snorkel over the coral reefs of the Rosario Islands and Isla Barú, returning by 16:30 for an evening stroll in Bocagrande or Manga.
