Ålesund

Norway, Europe

Spread across outer Sunnmøre islands at the mouth of Storfjorden, Ålesund pairs its 1904 to 1907 Jugendstil stone town and Brosundet fishing canal with Mount Aksla views, Atlantic islands, and cruises into the Hjørundfjord and Geirangerfjord.

Quick decisions

How many days? Three days let you walk the Jugendstil streets around Brosundet, climb the 418 steps to Fjellstua on Mount Aksla, visit Atlanterhavsparken on Hessa and Sunnmøre Museum at Borgundgavlen, drive through the subsea tunnels to Alnes Lighthouse on Godøya, and take a full-day fjord cruise into Hjørundfjorden or Geirangerfjorden.
Where should I stay? Stay along the Brosundet canal on Aspøya and Apotekergata for converted klippfisk warehouses right on the water, or choose Kongens gate, Kirkegata, and Skansekaia on Nørvøya within a five-minute walk of the express boat quay, Hurtigruten terminal, and Byparken stairs.
Do I need a car? You do not need a car for central Aspøya and Nørvøya, which are linked by Hellebrua over Brosundet, nor for seasonal fjord cruises to Geiranger and Hjørundfjorden. A rental car or FRAM local bus helps reach Alnes Lighthouse via the Vigra Fixed Link subsea tunnels and Runde bird island.
Best for: Early-20th-century Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) stone architecture, panoramic coastal viewpoints, Atlantic aquarium exhibits, klippfisk and bacalao culinary heritage, and fjord excursions into the Sunnmøre Alps and UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord.
Before you go: Ålesund has an oceanic climate exposed to the Norwegian Sea, so pack a windproof waterproof jacket in every season. If you plan to drive Trollstigen on County Road 63, note that the mountain pass closes during winter and typically opens from mid-May to October; check the official site before travelling.
Getting around: Central Ålesund across Aspøya and western Nørvøya is compact enough to cross on foot in twenty minutes. FRAM operates 18 local bus routes and 9 express bus routes through the town, as well as airport coaches to Ålesund Airport, Vigra and rail-link buses to Åndalsnes for the Rauma Line.
Continue your trip: Sail south on the daily Hurtigruten or Havila Kystruten coastal express to Bergen, sail north to Trondheim and Tromsø, or connect via Åndalsnes and Dombås by rail to Oslo.

Overview

Stretched across a chain of outer islands in Møre og Romsdal county where the Storfjorden meets the Norwegian Sea, Ålesund is Norway's premier Art Nouveau town and the commercial fishing capital of the country. The historic centre spans the islands of Hessa (4 square kilometres), Aspøya, and Nørvøya (5 square kilometres), while the wider 28.93-square-kilometre urban area recorded 55,684 residents in 2024 across Ålesund and neighbouring Sula, with Ålesund Municipality reaching 59,663 inhabitants on 1 January 2026. Granted limited trading port (ladested) rights in 1793, full ladested status in 1824, municipal self-government in 1838, and market town (kjøpstad) charter in 1848, the harbour grew around coastal cod fisheries and overseas klippfisk (salted and dried cod) exports.

On the stormy night of 23 January 1904, a gale-driven fire that started at Aalesund Preserving Co. on Nedre Strandgate 39 destroyed nearly 850 wooden houses and left more than 10,000 residents without shelter, while claiming only one life, 76-year-old Ane Heen. Rebuilt in stone, brick, and mortar between 1904 and 1907 by roughly 30 Norwegian architects and 20 master builders in the Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) style, Ålesund rises around the fishing boats of Brosundet beneath the 135-metre ridge of Mount Aksla.

Getting there

Ålesund Airport, Vigra (AES) sits on the island of Vigra in Giske Municipality roughly 18 kilometres north of the centre, linked to Nørvøya without ferries since 1987 by the Vigra Fixed Link subsea tunnels, comprising the 3,520-metre Ellingsøy Tunnel (140 metres below sea level) and the 4,222-metre Valderøy Tunnel (137 metres below sea level). Scheduled flights connect Vigra with Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim, Stavanger, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, and Gdańsk, while FRAM airport coaches reach the town centre in around 20 to 25 minutes.

By sea, northbound and southbound Hurtigruten and Havila Kystruten coastal express ships on the historic 1893 Bergen to Kirkenes route dock daily at Skansekaia, fitted with high-capacity shore power in 2022, and make seasonal detours into Geirangerfjorden in summer and Hjørundfjorden in autumn. Because Ålesund has no railway tracks of its own, coordinated FRAM rail-link buses follow European route E136 for 120 kilometres along Romsdalsfjorden to Åndalsnes station, meeting SJ Norge trains on the Rauma Line for connections via Dombås to Oslo and Trondheim.

Where to stay

Visitors choosing where to stay in Ålesund focus on two central islands divided by the Brosundet tidal strait and connected by Hellebrua bridge. On the eastern shore of Aspøya, converted 1904 to 1907 brick and stone klippfisk warehouses along Apotekergata and Notenesgata offer canal-front rooms with heavy timber beams and views of moored fishing vessels, steps from Jugendstilsenteret, Fiskerimuseet on Molovegen, and the Molja breakwater where the 1889 lighthouse tower operates as Room 47 of Hotel Brosundet. Quieter residential streets climb west along Kirkegata toward the 1909 marble parish church and Skateflua fast-boat quay.

Across Hellebrua on western Nørvøya, full-service waterfront and city hotels along Kongens gate, Keiser Wilhelms gate, Sorenskriver Bulls gate, and Skansekaia place you beside the pedestrian shopping streets, the Hurtigruten and Havila coastal steamer terminal, the main regional bus station, and the foot of the 418-step staircase up Mount Aksla in Byparken. Travellers arriving by car for museum visits or alpine hikes also find peaceful bases near Borgundgavlen or beside Norangsfjorden at the 1891 wooden Hotel Union Øye.

Things to do

Start at the former Swan Pharmacy (Svaneapoteket, built 1905 to 1907 by architect Hagbarth Martin Schytte-Berg) to explore Jugendstilsenteret and KUBE, where preserved wooden apothecary cabinets and multimedia displays recount the 1904 fire and subsequent stone reconstruction. Walk along Brosundet past stone sea warehouses to Molja Lighthouse on the harbour mole and Fiskerimuseet inside the 1861 Holmbua warehouse. On Aspøya, visit the 1909 marble-clad Ålesund Church designed by Sverre Knudsen and pass Waldehuset on Fjellgata 2 before crossing Hellebrua to Byparken and climbing the 418 steps past the Kniven overlook to Fjellstua on Mount Aksla.

West on Hessa, watch daily diving shows in the 4-million-litre Great Atlantic tank and outdoor seal bay at Atlanterhavsparken and hike the coastal baterías at Tueneset or the 314-metre summit of Sukkertoppen. East at Borgundgavlen, tour the 55 historic buildings and replica Viking ships of Sunnmøre Museum alongside medieval Borgund Church, then dedicate full days to Hjørundfjorden, Geirangerfjorden and Trollstigen, or Alnes Lighthouse, Giske, and Runde.

Food and drink

As Norway's leading klippfisk export port since the Second World War, Ålesund celebrates salted and dried Atlantic cod in local restaurants along Brosundet and converted stone warehouses on Apotekergata and Notenesgata. Historically split flat, dry-salted in round stacks for a month, and laid across sun-warmed coastal granite rocks before indoor dryers took over in the 1950s, klippfisk remains the culinary signature of Sunnmøre. The classic local dish is Norwegian bacalao, a slow-simmered casserole of rehydrated klippfisk, sliced potatoes, onions, olive oil, tomato purée, and pimiento introduced in the 19th century by Basque sailors arriving to purchase salt cod.

Traditional cafés and tavernas also serve Sunnmøre blandaball, a hearty coastal dumpling of grated potato and ground white fish simmered in seasoned broth with salted mutton, rutabaga, carrot, and bacon. Along the quayside of Brosundet south of Hellebrua, local fishing boats sell freshly boiled fjord shrimp and crab claws directly over the gunwales to passers-by, while every regional fjord ferry crossing since 1971 has served warm griddle-baked sveler folded around whipped buttercream or slices of caramelised brunost.

Culture

Ålesund combines deep-sea maritime heritage with an active year-round cultural calendar across its island neighbourhoods. During the Second World War occupation, the town earned the wartime nickname Little London for its central role in the clandestine Shetland Bus and resistance boat crossings across the North Sea to Scotland and England. Architectural preservation stands at the forefront of civic life: since 1999, Ålesund has belonged to the European Réseau Art Nouveau Network, celebrating the more than 300 stone and brick buildings designed between 1904 and 1907 after the town fire.

Each summer on Midsummer's Eve (23 June), crowds gather on boats and along the shoreline at Slinningsodden on Hessa for Slinningsbålet, a hand-built wooden pallet bonfire tower that set a 47.4-metre world record in 2016 and reached 40.46 metres in 2023. Late August brings the annual Norwegian Food Festival (Den Norske Matfestivalen) to Brosundet, while academic and sporting life centres on the local campus of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), attended by roughly 1,800 students, and top-flight football matches played by Aalesunds FK, founded in 1914.
