Best Time to Visit Beijing: Seasons and Weather

Comparing Beijing's golden autumn foliage, spring blossoms in the royal parks, warm monsoon summers and bright winter skies.

Set at the northern edge of the North China Plain where flat farmland meets the Yanshan Mountains, Beijing experiences four sharply distinct continental seasons. For the clearest blue skies, dry mountain visibility on the Great Wall and comfortable temperatures in vast flagstone courtyards, plan your visit for September to late October or April to May.

Autumn (September to late October) is known across the capital as Golden Autumn and offers the most rewarding conditions of the year. Summer humidity clears rapidly in early September, leaving mild sunny afternoons, crisp evenings and deep blue skies above the yellow palace roofs. By mid-October, smoke trees and maples along the Mutianyu and Jinshanling ridges turn copper and scarlet, followed in late October and early November by dazzling golden ginkgo avenues outside the Forbidden City turret corners, inside Ditan Park and around the Lama Temple. Bear in mind that the first week of October is China's National Day Golden Week holiday; aim for mid-September or the second half of October for calmer pathways.

Spring (April and May) warms quickly after the winter thaw, bringing magnolia, crabapple, peach and lilac blossoms to the Summer Palace, Beihai Park and Fayuan Temple. Days are dry and bright, with occasional breezy afternoons blowing down from the northwest steppes and a lively domestic holiday break at the start of May.

Summer (June to August) is hot, humid and lush, with nearly two-thirds of the year's rainfall arriving in July and August as dramatic late-afternoon thunderstorms. The reward is long daylight hours, emerald-green mountain valleys and blooming pink lotus beds across Yuanmingyuan and Shichahai; enter shadeless stone plazas early in the morning.

Winter (November to March) is cold, dry and surprisingly sunny. Siberian winds drop mountain temperatures below freezing, yet crowds thin out across major museums, Houhai Lake turns into an outdoor ice-chair rink, and copper-pot mutton hotpot is at its peak.
