Hongqiao Pearl Market: Freshwater Pearls, Silk and Bargaining

Navigating the five floors of Hongqiao Market opposite the Temple of Heaven for freshwater pearls, silk and custom tailoring.

Directly across the road from the East Gate of the Temple of Heaven (reached via pedestrian skybridges from Tiantan East Gate Station on Subway Line 5), the five-storey Chinese-roofed building of the Hongqiao Market (Hongqiao Shichang, universally known in English as the Pearl Market) has been Beijing's best-known one-stop emporium for freshwater and saltwater pearls, custom silk tailoring and travel gifts since the 1980s. Because foreign prime ministers, royalty and diplomatic delegations have shopped on its upper floors for decades, almost every vendor speaks rapid-fire English and welcomes international payment cards alongside Alipay and WeChat Pay.

How the five floors are organised

Skip the basement seafood and digital accessories counters unless you need a spare charging cable, and ride the escalators straight up toward the pearl galleries on Levels 3, 4 and 5:

  • Levels 1 and 2 (watches, electronics, luggage, silk and tailoring): stalls stocked with hardshell suitcases, cashmere scarves, embroidered silk robes, chopstick sets and bespoke tailors who can measure and stitch a linen shirt or wool suit within forty-eight hours.
  • Level 3 (the main freshwater pearl hall): hundreds of open booths piled with strands of cultured freshwater pearls farmed in the lakes of Zhejiang and Jiangsu, ranging from playful baroque (irregularly shaped) pearls to round white, pink and lavender strands that staff will custom-knot to your exact necklace or bracelet length while you wait.
  • Levels 4 and 5 (boutique pearl showrooms and South Sea / Tahitian pearls): quieter, enclosed glass showrooms, such as the famous Fanghua counters, specialising in high-lustre Edison freshwater pearls, golden South Sea pearls, dark Tahitian pearls and jadeite jewellery with official gemmological certificates.

How to test real pearls and bargain politely

At the open stalls on Level 3, vendors will happily demonstrate the classic pearl test: rubbing two real pearls gently against each other (or scraping a surface lightly with a blade) produces a tiny puff of white calcium-carbonate powder that wipes clean leaving zero scratch behind, whereas plastic or glass beads slide smoothly or peel. On the open market floors (Levels 1 to 3), initial asking prices are inflated for lively negotiation: decide what an item means to you, start around twenty-five to thirty-five percent of the opening quote, keep a warm smile, and be ready to walk a few booths down if the calculator number stays too high. Finish your visit on the fifth-floor west terrace, which frames a straight-on elevated view of the blue-tiled Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests across the avenue.
