High-Speed Bullet Trains from Beijing: Stations and 12306 Tickets

Using passport e-tickets on China Railway 12306 and navigating Beijing South, West, Fengtai and North high-speed stations.

Beijing sits at the centre of the world's largest high-speed rail network, where smooth silver-and-red Fuxing ("Rejuvenation", G-series) bullet trains cruise at up to 350 kilometres per hour. For journeys under five hours, including Tianjin, Chengde, Datong, Pingyao, Jinan and even the 1,318-kilometre trunk line to Shanghai, high-speed rail is faster, roomier and far more reliable than flying once you factor in airport check-in buffers.

Matching your route to the right Beijing railway station

Beijing has seven passenger railway terminals, and turning up at the wrong one means a forty-minute cross-town ride. Always check the exact station suffix on your reservation:

  • Beijing South Station (Beijingnan, Subway Lines 4 and 14): the main hub for the Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway (reaching Shanghai Hongqiao in as little as four and a half hours, plus Nanjing, Suzhou and Hangzhou) and the thirty-minute intercity bullet shuttles to Tianjin.
  • Beijing West Station (Beijingxi, Lines 7 and 9) & Beijing Fengtai Station (Lines 10 and 16): handle the western and central trunk corridors to Xi'an, Zhengzhou, Luoyang, Pingyao, Wuhan and Guangzhou/Hong Kong West Kowloon.
  • Beijing North Station (Beijingbei at Xizhimen, Lines 2, 4 and 13) & Qinghe Station (Line 13): serve the automated 2022 Olympic high-speed line to the Badaling Great Wall, Datong and Inner Mongolia (Hohhot).
  • Beijing Chaoyang Station (Subway Line 3): handles high-speed trains northeast to Chengde, Shenyang and Harbin.

How passport e-tickets, 12306 and station boarding work

Paper train tickets have been completely replaced by real-name passport e-tickets. Tickets go on sale up to fifteen days before departure on the official Railway 12306 app (which has an English version accepting Visa and Mastercard) or via Trip.com, which allows early waitlist reservations and charges a small booking fee.

Treat a Chinese high-speed rail terminal like an airport: arrive 35 to 45 minutes before departure. At the outer station entrance, scan your physical passport at the staffed or automated real-name lane and pass your bags through the security X-ray (note that aerosols over 150 ml, pocket knives and scissors are prohibited). Look up your train number (such as G1 or G15) on the departure board to find your waiting hall gate (Jianpiaokou, e.g., Gate 12A). Boarding gates open fifteen minutes before departure and close three to five minutes prior: simply place your passport photo page flat on the automated e-gate scanner, or use the staffed manual lane at the end of the row, and ride the escalator down to the platform.
