Tiananmen Square: Checkpoints, Monuments and Booking Rules

Understanding advance passport reservations, security checkpoints, the Monument to the People's Heroes and surrounding halls at Tiananmen Square.

Stretching five hundred metres east to west and eight hundred and eighty metres north to south along the Central Axis, Tiananmen Square is one of the largest paved public plazas in the world. What was once a walled T-shaped imperial approach corridor holding the ministerial offices of the Ming and Qing empires was expanded in the 1950s into the ceremonial civic heart of modern China. Because the entire precinct sits inside a controlled security perimeter, you cannot simply stroll across the square on impulse: every visitor must hold an advance real-name reservation tied to their physical passport.

Booking slots and clearing security

Reservations for Tiananmen Square are free of charge and open online several days ahead via the official Tiananmen Square appointment mini-programme in WeChat or Alipay, with separate time windows for the dawn flag-raising, morning, afternoon and dusk flag-lowering. Note a helpful rule: if you already hold a confirmed ticket for the Forbidden City, the National Museum of China or the Tiananmen Rostrum on the same day, that booking usually allows entry through the outer security cordons, though walking onto the central flagstone expanse itself is sleekest with a dedicated square slot. Carry your physical passport, avoid bringing tripods, lighters or large luggage, and allow twenty to forty minutes for the bag X-ray and passport verification queues near Tiananmen East, Tiananmen West or Qianmen Subway stations (Lines 1, 2 and 8).

Landmarks around the plaza

  • Tiananmen Gate Tower (Gate of Heavenly Peace): built in 1417 at the southern edge of the Imperial City, fronted by five marble bridges over the outer Golden Water River, two carved marble cloud pillars (huabiao) and stone guardian lions.
  • Monument to the People's Heroes and Chairman Mao Memorial Hall: the thirty-eight-metre granite obelisk in the centre of the square features marble bas-reliefs of modern Chinese history, standing north of the colonnaded mausoleum.
  • Great Hall of the People and National Museum of China: monumental 1959 halls facing each other across the west and east sides of the square.
  • Zhengyangmen (Qianmen) Gate and Arrow Tower: the towering Ming southern city gate anchoring the south end of the square, leading directly onto Qianmen Street and west toward the National Centre for the Performing Arts.
